Dalilah Muhammad, a native of Rochdale Village and graduate of Bayside’s Cardozo High School, captured the 400-meter hurdle at the 2016 games in Rio de Jaineiro, the first American woman ever to win the race. “I was just 7 years old when I joined the track team,” Muhammad recalled. “I was just a little girl running around Rochdale.” Hundreds of people came out to Saturday’s victory parade, which was organized by state Senator James Sanders, Assemblywoman Vivian Cook, the Rochdale Village board of directors and Hope NYC Church in South Ozone Park. The parade began at Roy Wilkins Park, where Muhammad began training under the guidance of numerous coaches including George Taylor of the NOVAS Track Club. Sanders challenged Muhammad to a friendly foot race, but the lawmaker was no match for Muhammad’s speed. During the celebration, Muhammad took pictures with fans and local youth, many of whom undoubtedly aspire to be future Olympians themselves. At the end of the parade, Muhammad thanked her parents and the community for their support. She also encouraged other young people to follow their dreams. She said she started by setting small goals and slowly expanding her accomplishments. “It didn’t just happen overnight,” Muhammad said. “It was hard work and dedication. It takes determination to ultimately be the best.” PHOTOS BY CHRIS GRIFFITH INTRODUCING A NEW LEVEL OF LUXURY LONG ISLAND CITY, NY EXCLUSIVE OFFER! 1 MONTH FREE* on select units. 888.805.2408 NYCleasing@heatherwood.com www.heatherwood.com/27 * Offer valid on selected units from 8/20/16-9/30/16.
