Elvin Hernandez, 28, of 143rd Street was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the Sept. 3 shooting that claimed the life of Albert Schaper, 20, of North Bergen, NJ. Law enforcement sources said the shooting appeared to be gang related, but the relationship between Hernandez and the victims is unclear at this time. According to authorities, Schaper and a 31-year-old man were inside a car at the corner of Jamaica Avenue and the Van Wyck Expressway at 9:29 p.m. on Sept. 3 when Hernandez allegedly walked up to the vehicle. After exchanging words, sources familiar with the investigation said, Hernandez pulled out an gun and opened fire on the two men. Police said Schaper took a bullet to his chest, while the 31-year-old man was shot in each arm. Officers from the 103rd Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident. Paramedics rushed both victims to Jamaica Hospital; Schaper was pronounced dead on arrival, and the 31-year-old man was listed in stable condition. 105th Precinct Laurelton, Rosedale, Queens Village Burned man found in car set ablaze in Brookville Firefighters found a man’s burned body in the trunk of a car that caught fire inside a parking lot in Brookville‘s Idlewild Park on Sept. 10, police reported. The blaze was reported at 11:42 p.m. on Sept. 10 inside the lot near the corner of 224th Street and 149th Avenue. Firefighters and police officers discovered a 2010 Nissan Sentra burning upon arrival. Shortly after the blaze was put out, firefighters opened the trunk and found the body of an unidentified male who had been significantly burned. The remains were brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing. 106th Precinct Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill Woman dead, six injured in South Ozone Park crash A 23-year-old woman lost her life early on the morning of Sept. 11 when the sedan she was riding in collided with a car at a South Ozone Park intersection, according to police. The incident occurred at 4:23 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the corner of 120th Street and Linden Boulevard. According to authorities, Desray Leroy, 23, of 108th Street in Richmond Hill was one of six passengers riding in a 2004 Audi A6 operated by a 25-year-old male that was traveling northbound on 120th Street. As the sedan approached the intersection, police said, it collided with a 1993 Honda Civic operated by Ray Mouton, 53, of Parsons Boulevard in Jamaica and traveling westbound on Linden Boulevard. The force of the impact caused the Audi to overturn. Officers from the 106th Precinct and EMS units responded to the scene. Leroy, who suffered head trauma, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital and was listed in critical condition. Three male passengers, ages 20, 22 and 23, were removed to NewYork- Presbyterian/Queens hospital and listed in stable condition; a 24-year-old man and a 21-yearold female were also rushed to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition. Paramedics brought Mouton to Jamaica Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Following an investigation, she was found not to have a valid driver’s license and was subsequently charged with aggravated unlicensed operator. Mouton was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court later on Sunday and released without bail; she is due back in court on Oct. 20, according to court records. 113th Precinct Rochdale, St. Albans, South Jamaica, Springfield Gardens 20-year-old man gunned down in car A 20-year-old man was found shot dead in the driver’s seat of his car in Jamaica on Sept. 10, according to police. Officers from the 113th Precinct responded to a 911 call about a suspicious white Lexus sedan idling in front of 124-08 153rd St. at 10:27 p.m. on Sept. 10. Inside the vehicle police discovered an unidentified male victim with a gunshot wound to the head, according to authorities. EMS units responded to the incident. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. There have been no arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
