The 17-time Grand Slam singles champion is hosting a youth tennis clinic, just days before the 2014 US Open at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on Aug. 21. About 25 children ages 7 to 12 from the Corona-based Elmcor Youth & Adult Activities Community Center are set to meet and play with Williams. The clinic is part of the “Returning the Love” initiative, where players reach out to surrounding community organizations both on and off the court. DEFENDING US OPEN CHAMP NADAL WITHD RAWS Fans of reigning US Open champion Rafael Nadal will have to find a new player to root for in the 2014 Grand Slam. Nadal decided against testing his injured right wrist and announced on Aug. 18 that he is withdrawing from the US Open due to the hurt joint. “I am sure you understand that it is a very tough moment for me since it is a tournament I love and where I have great memories from fans, the night matches, so many things,” Nadal said. “Not much more I can do right now, other than accept the situation and, as always in my case, work hard in order to be able to compete at the highest level once I am back.” Despite the loss of the defending champion, the US Open is packed with world-class talent as usual. World No. 1 ranked player Novak Djokovic has been named the top seed in the men’s singles and five-time US Open champion Roger Federer has been seeded No. 2 for the two-week event at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Rounding out the top four in the US Open is Stanislas Wawrinka at third, who defeated Nadal to win the 2014 Australian Open in January, and David Ferrer. The 2014 US Open will run from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8. Photo courtesy of Dominick Totino Rafael Nadal, the reigning US Open champion, withdraw from this year’s tournament with a wrist injury.
