4 The Courier sun • AUGUST 11, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com Bringing cops and community together for a ‘Night Out’ in Queens BY THE QUEENS COURIER STAFF editorial@qns.com/@QNS Queens showed their love for the men and women in blue at National Night Out Against Crime events across the borough on Tuesday night, August 2. Thousands turned out at local parks for an evening of fun activities hosted by each precinct. Observed across the U.S. and Canada, the National Night Out Against Crime aims to promote a stronger relationship between police and the communities they serve. Guests enjoyed free food, music, dancing, entertainment and other attractions while also taking the opportunity to meet with the officers who serve their communities. The 114th Precinct’s Night Out event at Astoria Park featured three special guests: Mayor Bill de Blasio, outgoing Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Chief of Department James O’Neill, who was named as Bratton’s successor earlier on Tuesday. De Blasio, Bratton and O’Neill took the opportunity to announce an expansion of the NYPD’s neighborhood policing initiative. The NYPD will assign beat officers to patrol specific parts of the precinct and connect with local residents and merchants, with the overall goal of building a stronger relationship between police and the community.
