The playground became open on Thursday, Aug. 4, when NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, Senator James Sanders and Councilman Donovan Richards came together to cut the ribbon to open the park. The improvement project upgraded the park, adding new equipment and replacing old equipment. The upgrade added 29 new benches, fences, basketball hoops, game tables and adult fi tness equipment. The project also added a new, four-lane running track, an asphalt infi eld for volleyball and tennis, safety surfacing, new planting areas and two new drinking fountains. Silver, Sanders and Richards all shared their thoughts on the new park. Commissioner Silver said the park is an ideal space for students to play and exercise. “Being active and involved in sports helps kids to focus, learn team working skills and stay healthy,” Silver said. Sanders said he remembered the park being nothing more than a concrete area that was only being used as a parking lot. Sanders thanked the Parks Department and School Construction Authority for their hard work. “Now, we have a place in a community, which is rated among the most obese, that will serve as an oasis of recreation and physical fi tness,” Sander said. The playground is named after native New Yorker Benjamin N. Cardozo, who was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Herbert C. Hoover in 1932. The playground was fi rst opened in 1957.
