Adventurous Astoria
New restaurants, cafes and bakeries to try in Astoria
BY JESSICA MILITELLO
Astoria’s restaurant scene is as diverse
as its residents, and there’s a new swell of
delicious dining experiences for Astorians
to sink their teeth into as summer begins.
No matter what cuisine you like, there’s
something new to taste, from soup dumplings
to traditional Turkish eats.
As the weather gets warmer, now is the
perfect time to get together some friends
and try some of these hot spots before
they’re fi lled with regulars.
Bund on Broadway
Bund on Broadway specializes in
Chinese cuisine such as dim sum, noodles
and soup dumplings, all handmade
and prepared fresh. As the neighborhood
begins to experience what Bund has to
off er, the menu will be expanded to have
seasonal options as well as more vegetarian
selections. Right now, its biggest draw
is its soup dumplings, which can be panfried
or steamed and fi lled with either
pork, vegetables or crabmeat. One of the
location’s partners, David Kong, who was
raised in Queens, felt Astoria was an obvious
choice for a new location.
“I want to give people more variety,”
Kong said. “Th e people here deserve an
authentic Chinese restaurant, and it does
very well when it’s authentic.”

Kinship Coff ee
A third installment of Kinship Coff ee
has made its way to the bustling street
of Broadway, perfectly located near the
subway for sleepy Astorians to get their
morning caff eine fi x before they start
their day. Owners and married couple
Stanley Rivera and Ashley Wood-Rivera
have lived in Astoria for over nine years
and had their eyes open for the next perfect
location. Th e shop off ers coff ee from
places like Ethiopia, Columbia and Brazil,
but their most beloved feature is a pourover
machine that is able to make multiple
cups of high-quality coff ee in under
fi ve minutes. Th eir vision for the neighborhood
is simple, according to Rivera.
“Good coff ee: that’s always been the
vision,” Stanley Rivera said. “Th is is a
quality spot, good coff ee, and in terms of
accessibility, our pour-overs are only $3,
so it’s a pretty good deal.”

Liv Salad
Liv Salad is another new edition to the
neighborhood off ering salads and bowls
that are healthy, delicious and fi lling.
Two of the bowls, Th e Harvest and Th e
Buddha, are quickly becoming favorites
among patrons, and the restaurant boasts
fresh daily ingredients bought locally. One
of the owners, Achille (who declined to
give his last name for print), explained
that he and his partners felt healthy choices
were certainly “lacking” in the area.
“My partners and I thought about
bringing something healthy and fresh into
the neighborhood that really nobody else
has around here,” Achille said. “It’s a little
tough to get people to step out into the
healthy side of things, but we try to incorporate
something that’s fi lling so that you
feel like you’re not just eating a salad.”
