Since the group’s inception in 1971, its Youth Corps volunteer program has been taking 14-17 year olds and training them in various areas of the EMS field. “These young, people have an up close and personal opportunity to see how EMS operates from the EMT to the management of the operations,” said Felix Cabrera, an EMT crew chief with the FHVAC. “They learn responsibility, commitment and team work. This program teaches them skills that they may one day put into use to aid someone in need.” The first phase of training with the FHVAC Youth Corps is dispatcher training. After learning to become a dispatcher, youth volunteers are trained and certified with the American Heart Association in areas like CPR and Basic Life Support. Participants who stay with the Youth Corps until the age of 18 become general members of the FHVAC and are offered a chance to undergo free, official EMT training and certification. The Youth Corps has been mostly dormant since the loss of FHVAC volunteer Richard Pearlman on September 11, 2001, Cabrera said. The program was revamped last July and currently has four trainees finishing the first leg of their training. For more information, call FHVAC at 718-793-2055. The Queens Council on the Arts (QCA) hosted a one-of-a-kind housewarming party to celebrate its move into the Kaufman Astoria Studios on Saturday, June 22. The affair had the streets outside 37-11 35th Avenue, which QCA now calls home, bustling with live music, street food and arts and crafts for all ages. Guests feasted on treats from local vendors while children unleashed their inner artists at multiple arts and crafts stations. According to QCA development manager Jacqueline de Dios, the block party drew over 200 people from all over the city.
