According to authorities, two plain-clothed officers were driving an unmarked police car southbound on 135th Street at 1:33 a.m. Sunday morning when they approached a double-parked SUV with a man standing next to it holding an open container of alcohol. When they approached the man-- identified in published reports as George Tillman of Maryland-- the officers observed a firearm in his waistband. When police attempted to engage Tillman, the 32-year-old man fled on foot, and the officers pursued him. As the suspect approached the corner of 135th Street and 116th Avenue, a second unmarked police car with three officers assigned to the 106th Precinct stopped Tillman. Police said Tillman then reached for a weapon in his waistband, causing four officers to discharge their weapons. Tillman was struck several times in the torso. Paramedics rushed to the scene and brought him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officers involved in the shooting were brought to Long Island Jewish Medical Center for treatment and evaluation. A .40-caliber Hi-Point firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting. The investigation is ongoing. 113th Precinct Jamaica, Springfield Gardens Ex-firefighter dies in St. Albans fire A middle-aged man died after a house fire broke out in St. Albans on Monday morning. Woman was busted for smuggling $50K of cocaine in coffee bags at JFK Customs officers never know what they might find, and where. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport busted a woman entering the country Wednesday with 3 lbs. of powder cocaine hidden inside two plastic coffee bags, officials announced Thursday. Sherese Lee Ann Drake, a Jamaican citizen, was arriving from Montego Bay, Jamaica, when she presented herself and her suitcase for inspection. Upon examination, CBP officers found one coffee bag with white powder. Drake was then escorted to a private examination room where officers found the second bag with white power that tested positive for cocaine. The street value of the 3 lbs. of cocaine is estimated at more than $50,000. This is not the first, or even the most inventive, incident of drug smuggling at JFK. In 2014, a man attempted to smuggle 18 lbs. of cocaine, worth nearly $300,000, into JFK inside eight bags of powdered custard. There have also been multiple instances of individuals smuggling drugs inside sneakers, frozen meat, hair products and even in their underwear. “This seizure is another example of our CBP officers being ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of illicit drugs,” said Robert E. Perez, Director of DBP’s New York Field Operations. Drake was placed under arrest and turned over to the Port Authority Police Department. She now faces state narcotics smuggling charges.
