FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT WWW.QNS.COM APRIL 6, 2017 • THE QUEENS COURIER 91 Gurney’s: A romantic getaway any time of the year BY ELIZABETH ALONI At the end of winter, I am always itching for a getaway but I don’t want the hassle of planes and complicated planning. Gurney’s Montauk is the perfect getaway for romance, relaxation and fun just a couple of hours from home! We arrived Friday aft ernoon to a fully renovated lobby that oozed laid-back luxury and provided a breathtaking view of the ocean right through the dining room. I love Montauk’s beach; it’s as beautiful as it is in the summer but quieter, and the snow on the sand was really magical. I could feel the tension releasing from my body as we walked to our room hearing the waves crashing below. Our room, in its earthy tones and chic décor, was the perfect place to unwind with a glass of wine, enjoying the ocean views. We couldn’t wait to have dinner at Scarpetta Beach overlooking the ocean, with beachy chic décor and the most perfect lighting…it did not disappoint. Scarpetta Beach is the seaside sister of the iconic Manhattan eatery which I now have to try! Our dinner was scrumptious. We enjoyed Black Cod with caramelized fennel and concentrated tomatoes that melted in your mouth with an explosion of fl avor. We also had the Halibut with leeks, endive and salsa verde which was fresh, simple and delicious. A side of mushrooms was the perfect complement to our meals. Th e sommelier helped us pick a perfect Cabernet from their impressive wine list. On Saturday, by the time we made our way to the lobby, we found that a cocktail class was in session and we didn’t want to miss out. Tito’s Handmade Vodka was hosting a class about Tito’s clean and fresh vodka and providing tastes of delicious cocktails in the elegant Regent Cocktail Club with sweeping views of the ocean. Tito’s cocktails made for a breakfast for champions! Now for real breakfast! We hit the town of Montauk for the famous John’s Pancake House, where we enjoyed banana pancakes and omelets. Another plus for Montauk off season? No line! Even as it drizzled, walking the sleepy town was a perfect pace for our relaxing weekend. We couldn’t get enough of Th e Candied Anchor with candy from around the world, unique edible fi nds and the cutest party goods. Th e knowledgeable owner gave us the origin of everything that intrigued us and the list was endless. We left with bags of candies, chocolates and goodies that I’ve never seen before! Aft er a late start, we headed back to Gurney’s to change and head out to dinner, but we just couldn’t leave. Gurney’s is just too intoxicating. We happily grabbed a table once again at Scarpetta Beach and enjoyed spaghetti and cavatelli which even surpassed our meal the night before (if that’s possible). Aft er dinner, we lounged by the fi re pit under twinkle lights and listened to the waves. It was a perfect end to our evening. We awoke well rested and a bit blue that we would be heading home. What a surprise to fi nd a brunch that blew us away! Carving stations, seafood platters, breakfast goodies, baked goods, cheeses, Mediterranean dips, lox, pastas and more. We took our time and ate through the off erings and then…dessert! A chocolate fountain with fresh fruit and cakes for dipping, mini pastries that were to die for! It couldn’t be a more perfect send- off for a perfect weekend. Now I am thinking about planning my next Gurney’s getaway and then I hear that this summer will see the opening of Gurney’s Newport! Th at is certainly on the top of my list to visit. Summer can’t come soon enough.
