Oer ends 5/4/17 QC Funds raised for funeral of DWI victim The wife of a Corona man who was killed by a drunk driver has started a GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral. Gelacio Reyes, 32, was going home from his shift as a delivery man in Manhattan when 25-year-old Cristian Guiracocha hit him at the intersection of 39th Street and 43rd Avenue in Sunnyside with his red 2002 Ford Escape. The incident happened at about 2:53 a.m. on April 1. Flor Jimenez, Reyes’ wife, started a GoFundMe page to raise $2,000 for funeral costs. As of April 5, she had raised $4,950. According to the Daily News, he left behind two boys and a 1-month old girl. Guiracocha, who was drunk and not carrying his license, left the scene but cops were able to track him down several hours later. Guiracocha had his license revoked twice before the incident and was charged on Saturday with DWI, aggravated unlicensed operator and refusal to take a breath test. Angela Matua ‘Car Free Day NYC’ comes to Queens for Earth Day To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, the city will once again implement the Car Free Day NYC initiative, which will close off certain streets to cars in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On April 22, Woodside Avenue from 75th to 77th streets in Woodside and Shore Boulevard from Ditmars Boulevard to Astoria Park South in Astoria will go car free. Organizers are encouraging New Yorkers to use other forms of transportation like bicycles. According to Citi Bike, the company saw its highest ridership in 2016 on April 22. Parks Dept. offers vision of a new look Astoria Park BY ANGELA MATUA amatua@qns.com @AngelaMatua After months of community input, the Parks Department has released a rendering for the first phase of improvements at Astoria Park. The park will receive $30 million for upgrades as part of the city’s Anchor Parks initiative that was announced last August. In total, five city parks will receive money to put toward amenities such as new soccer fields, comfort stations, running tracks and hiking trails. According to Meghan Lalor, spokesperson for the Parks Department, the first phase will increase and improve the play capacity near the track and soccer field, protect existing trees and enhance planting and provide drainage and erosion solutions. The current soccer field will be replaced by a 180-by-360-foot synthetic turf soccer field surrounded by a newly reconstructed 400-meter running track. Additionally, the space will include adult fitness equipment, drinking fountains, bottle fillers and misting posts and a new seating area with bleachers. The Parks Department expects to complete the re-design by December 2017. The project will cost $13.5 million, which leaves about $16.5 million for additional improvements. Those include the reconstruction of Charybdis Playground, adding more gathering spaces, lighting, green infrastructure such as rain gardens and new programming.
