Well, 1942 has been a rough year for
Eddie Kurnitz. He owes thousands to loan
sharks, is recently widowed and must ask
his cold, cruel mother to raise his teen sons.
Somehow, playwright Neil Simon turns this
bleak scenario into a poignant comedy.
On opening night, the audience receives
paper cups of real chocolates as they
enter the theater. Aft er all, the action
unfolds over a candy store in a rundown
apartment in Yonkers. Director
Patrice Valenti also portrays Aunt Gert,
a sweet but vocally challenged spinster.
Her sister Bella is played with outstanding
angst, aff ection and empathy by local
community theater veteran Heidi Jean
Weinrich. Th eir gangster brother Louie
(Michael Beaury) skillfully delivers his
lines with a paradoxical mixture of likability
and menace. Hapless but lovable
Eddie is very well played by local favorite
Michael Chimenti. He recently presented
a successful one-man show/fundraiser
at TBTBNY (Th eatre by the Bay, New
York). His talented wife, Cathy Chimenti,
is the troupe’s artistic director.
Th e ongoing interactions between
Michael McBride as coming-of-age

and Rosemary Kurtz as hard-as-steel
Grandma Kurnitz become the heart and
soul of the story. Th e boys, still reeling
from the death of their mother, must survive
the frigid, loveless child rearing of
their grandma. Her physical disabilities
are the palpable symbols of the emotional
abuse she suff ered in the Holocaust. Th eir
mutual dependence and singular struggles
ultimately create a life affi rming tribute
to families of any era. Th e common
denominator of love and laughter have
painted a colorful and touching portrait.
Bravo to the entire cast!
