Her swift rise in the jazz world enabled her to record eight albums with such distinguished labels as EMI, Warner and Sony. She also earned recognition for “Best Jazz Album” and “Best Jazz Performance” at the Korea Music Awards. The potent beauty of celebratory festivals, initiations and other traditional rituals will be conveyed through masterful objects made of wood, metal and terra cotta in the exhibit. Amadou Njoya is a fourth generation Cameroonian born into a family of distinguished artisans and advisors for the royal family of the Kingdom of Bamum. FRIDAY, FEB. 8 Flushing Town Hall is holding a Gamin-Wind & Stone event at 8 p.m. Gamin is one of the most celebrated piri, taepyeongso (Korean traditional oboe family) and saengwhang (ancient wind-blow instrument) players today. Wind & Stone is a World Music project by Gamin and Satoshi Takeishi (drummer, percussionist, and arranger) presenting both traditional and contemporary sounds of Korean music. Admission is $15 for members and $10 for students. SATURDAY, FEB. 8 THRU SUNDAY, MARCH 30 Flushing Town Hall is holding a Korean Folk Painting exhibit. Korean folk painting, also called Minhwa, expresses the life and thoughts of Koreans truthfully, with great wit. It is also used as a symbol of good fortune for the New Year. This exhibition will showcase 60 artworks from Baraem Art Research Institute in Korea and will give visitors a chance to experience the beauty of Korean folk paintings. There is a suggested admission of $5 for members and students. The opening reception is February 8 at 6 p.m. FRIDAY, FEB. 14 Chilean vocalist Natalia Bernal, keyboardist Mike Eckroth and seven-string guitarist Jason Ennis blend the infectious rhythms and nuanced songwriting traditions of Latin America in original compositions and choice picks from the Great American Songbook.
