With 2014 almost over, the Fire Department is calling this year their busiest ever with an estimated response to 520,000 emergencies, up about 8.7 percent from 2013 and the most emergency responses since 2010 when there were 507,017 in total, according to data and projections from the FDNY and the Uniformed Firefighters Association. “Protecting lives and property of those that live, work or visit New York is our number one priority. The biggest, most vibrant city in America has the busiest fire department staffed by the most dedicated firefighters in the nation,” said Steve Cassidy, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association. Along with dealing with fires, the department also responds to medical emergencies and other emergencies like gas leaks, building collapses and serious vehicle accidents. Medical emergencies count for the highest block of emergencies this year, with 204,768. The department also has the extra responsibility of responding to nuclear, chemical and biological threats, which, luckily, stands at zero for the past year. The number of emergencies that firefighters respond to expanded dramatically over the last few decades. Civilian emergencies have soared 22 percent since 2002; 45 percent since 1990; 70 percent since 1985 and an astounding 552 percent since 1960. Emergency calls were up in every category.
