My fun there was shopping. Now back home, my best fun shopping having done sightseeing on my last trip. Now, was the Holiday Market at the shops at atlas Park in glendale. My two children Josh and elizabeth have devoted endless hours to bring quality vendors to the community, who couldn’t afford a brick and mortar store, but the past four weekends I had the pleasure of shopping and dining with these great, unique merchants. The diversity of the vendors on each of my visits impressed me with the passion they had for what they do. Some had been with us at the outdoor spring and summer LiC flea but some I met for the first time in the handsome Atlas Park mall. One of my favorite vendors is Deepti who sold jewelry, scarves, purses and artifacts from India, has figured out what I like and amidst her literally hundreds of items she was dead on right. I couldn’t resist buying gifts of bracelets, a caftan and necklaces and earrings from her. I think I love her collection so much because it reminds me of the best trip of my life with my husband to India. We traveled from Delhi to the Rajasthan region to the Taj Mahal to Mumbai, staying at former palaces of the maharanis. India is also an entrepreneurial country and even the smallest towns had strips of stores with housing above them. The cities are bustling and the history astounding to experience. I sat for hours taking in the scene of the Taj Mahal built by a lovesick man in memory of his deceased wife! Astounding site. But back to the Holiday Market, I found great vintage items at Miss V’s “store.” Since this was the last weekend of the market, she conceived of a great sale. For $25, I filled up a bag of shoes and clothes. She was so funny, saying, “Come on. You can fit more in!” And I did! A great way to have a clearance sale. Jonah and addy had to have the delicious macaroni and cheese balls for a snack, and I had scrumptious pumpkin waffles hot off the grill and hot cider from another vendor. I ate the food in the “dining room” and enjoyed the projection on one of the walls of historic photos of Glendale, Maspeth, Middle Village and Ridgewood supplied by my editor Robb from the photo files of our newspaper, the ridgewood times. I gathered my energy and visited a few more vendors, ordering personalized drawing paper, notebooks and then a personalized pad with the Mets logo on it for nine-year-old blake. I had mistakenly given Blake a Yankees logo pad and he embarrassed me by saying, “Grandma, you know I’m a Mets fan!” Correction made! My little family enjoys regular treats from the market -- honey, guacamole, pickles and brownies -- so we got our last licks until the market reopens in the spring. It was bittersweet to see the market end. The Shops at Atlas Mall in Glendale is a unique shopping center with lots of free parking and a feeling like you are in Boca Raton. The two-level mall has a large town square surrounded on three sides by the stores, my two favorites being “the fair,” a mini Fortunoff’s filled with everything you could need for your home and run by a family for decades. The other is shiro’s of Japan, serving the best sushi in New York I promise it’s worth the trip. Discover another part of the international borough of Queens. You too will love the experience. Merry Xmas to all my wonderful readers and a happy and healthy new year!
