42 DECEMBER 22, 2016 RIDGEWOOD TIMES WWW.QNS.COM SPORTS Grover Cleveland Tigers suff er fi rst loss of the season against Newtown By ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT The Grover Cleveland High School Tigers boys varsity basketball team dropped their fi rst game of the season against Newtown High School by a score of 67-75 on Dec. 15. The Tigers came out of the gate strong, mounting a 20-17 fi rst quarter lead, but were held in check by Newtown’s defense in the second quarter, only managing fi ve points. Entering the fi nal quarter down 40-59, the Tigers tried to mount a comeback, scoring 27 points in the fi nal stanza, but ultimately could not make up for the slow second quarter. Senior Matthew Troche led Grover Cleveland with 23 points, while three of his other teammates, Dqui Berry, Jason Sanchez and Kacper Maziarz, added 13, 10 and 13 points respectively. The Tigers look to get back on the winning track against the 1-3 Long Island City Team on Thursday, Dec. 22. Photos by Joseph Swift
