FDNY probes cause of
big blvd. blaze

Fire marshals were still looking
into the cause of the massive Dec.
13 fi ve-alarm inferno in Sunnyside
as the Ridgewood Times went
to press on Wednesday aft ernoon.
Twelve people, including seven
firefighters, were injured after
fl ames ripped through a row of stores
on Queens Boulevard near 45th
Street in Sunnyside aft er 2:15 a.m. last
Thursday morning, it was reported.
According to the Fire Department,
the blaze began inside of the New
York Style Eats restaurant located at
45-02 Queens Blvd., near 45th Street.
The fl ames rapidly spread to several
adjacent businesses.
The situation took a more frightening
turn when a number of
fi refi ghters got caught in a violent
backdraft — a blast of fl ames and
heavy smoke.
Hundreds of firefighters converged
on the scene; it took them
more than fi ve hours to bring the
blaze under control.
In the week since the inferno,
Sunnyside residents have come
together to help the aff ected business
repair. More than $100,000
had been collected through fundraising
campaigns launched by
the Sunnyside Shines Business
Improvement District and others
in the community.
Along with New York Style Eats,
the damaged businesses include
Sidetracks Restaurant, one of the
neighborhood’s most popular eateries,
Zen Yai Noodles & Coff ee, The
Romantic Depot and The UPS Store.
