The Christ the King (CK) girls varsity soccer team defeated The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) by a score of 5-0 on Nov. 2 at Aviator Field in Brooklyn to win their fifth consecutive Brooklyn/Queens Catholic High School championship. This victory cemented CK’s place in the New York State semifinals as well. The game started with most of the play taking place in the midfield until CK freshman Karen Pineda scored in the 21st minute, assisted by senior Sarah Nolan, captain of the team. CK created a few more scoring chances in the first half, but were not able to capitalize. Medina Mulic scored the second goal of the contest in the 45th minute after receiving a pass from sophomore Genesis Campos and dribbling past a defender. Pineda scored her second goal of the game in the 51st minute after receiving a pass on top of the 18 yard box from Campos, putting CK up 3-0. Nolan made it 4-0 only 3 minutes later, assisted by junior Kiana Leger. The final goal was scored by freshman Karol Guaman, assisted by Mulic’s corner kick in the 78th minute. The CK defenders, Julianna Lignowski, Elizabeth Gordillo and Diana Aucapina, provided a solid defensive front, not allowing a single goal, as well as a great counterattacking threat. CK will now face Notre Dame Academy of Staten Island on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Saint Anthony’s High School in Huntington Station, at 4 p.m. in the New York State semifinals.
