Lady Royals capture Brooklyn/Queens soccer title
The Lady Royals of Christ the
King High School brought home
to Middle Village the Brooklyn/
Queens Championship on Oct. 26 with
a 1-0 win over Xaverian High School in
the championship match.
Christ the King upset the top-ranked
Xavierian squad, taking control of the
game from the start. Putting immediate
pressure on the Xaverian defense,
the Royals created numerous scoring
opportunities for forwards Gabriela
Campuzano, Taysha Deshommes and
Angel Cruz.
Freshman left winger Joanna Perez
had the best chance to open up the
scoring in the fi rst half, with a one vs.
keeper inside the 18 yard box, but the
Xaverian keeper was able to defl ect
her shot.
Finally, in the second half, the Royals
got their break when sophomore
Maya Marchan beat her defender
and score the game’s only goal from
16 yards out with a chip shot.
In winning the Brooklyn/Queens
title, Christ the King’s girls will play
for the citywide championship tonight,
Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m., as they head
to Staten Island to take on Owl Hollow.
They’re also scheduled to play Saturday,
Nov. 3, at the College of Staten Island
against the winner of the Diocese
of Rockville Centre’s tournament.
