Immigration Assistance Forum City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley hosted her first ever immigration info session on Sunday, Oct. 19 on Jamaica Avenue in Woodhaven. Held in collaboration with Rep. Nydia Velázquez, CUNY Citizenship NOW! and the Association of Mutual Help Unity and Solidarity Inc. (AAMUS), last Sunday night’s event provided an opportunity for Woodhaven residents to connect with a Spanish speaking immigration attorney to answer questions and help with the citizenship and residency process. “I’m proud to do my part to help expand free legal services to our hardworking immigrant communities in Queens,” said Crowley. “New York City was built on the contributions of immigrants––much like my grandparents––and we need to provide those same opportunities to those seeking a better life today. Strong immigrant communities are crucial to our city’s growth and economic prosperity. I want to thank Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and CUNY for their partnership and commitment to uplifting a new generation of New Yorkers.” Crowley is also now offering appointments with a CUNY immigration attorney, who speaks Polish, at her Glendale office twice a month. Making Halloween Cards For Kids The Builders Club at I.S. 73 in Maspeth recently made Halloween cards for children at Elmhurst Hospital Center. The mission of the Builders Club is to promote community service activities for the students at I.S. 73. Teachers Ms. Peyer and Mrs. Kliegman are working together devising new and exciting ways for the students to take part helping the surrounding community. The club is generating a lot of interest, and is off to a great start with over 60 club members already. A Relaxing Ridgewood Health Fair Shiatsu massages and free health screenings were available to guests at a community health fair that Wyckoff Heights Medical Center hosted at the 71st Avenue Triangle in Ridgewood last Saturday, Oct. 25. The event drew over 250 students, and by the end of the evening the carnival turned into a Halloween dance party. Some of the students dressed in costume, everyone had a wonderful time and the school raised money to donate for a good cause. TIMES, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2014 • 26
