MAN He’s Killed While Crossing Intersection by Robert Pozarycki A Middle Village man was fatally struck by a truck as he tried to cross at an intersection on the neighborhood’s border with Glendale just before dawn last Thursday morning, Oct. 23, police reported. Law enforcement sources identified him as 46-year-old Martin Srodin of 74th Street. Reportedly, the incident occurred at about 6:07 a.m. at the intersection of 80th Street and Cooper Avenue. According to information obtained by police, Srodin was attempting to cross 80th Street from west to east as a tractortrailer operated by a 64-year-old man was making a left turn onto 80th Street from Cooper Avenue eastbound. In doing so, authorities said, the truck’s rear wheels struck Srodin, causing severe trauma. The truck driver reportedly remained at the scene following the accident. Members of the 104th Precinct and EMS units responded to the location. Paramedics rushed Srodin to Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. No charges were filed against the truck driver, and no criminality is suspected, law enforcement sources said. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is continuing its inquiry, police noted. In the wake of the accident, City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley—while passing her condolences to Srodin’s family— called on the city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) “to improve safety at this intersection.” “Too many pedestrians in our community have lost their lives in traffic accidents, and the DOT needs to be more proactive on busy intersections like 80th Street and Cooper Avenue,” Crowley said in a statement to the Times Newsweekly last Friday, Oct. 24.
