Hundreds run and walk to help send local teens to college

Nearly 200 people came to Flushing
Meadows Park on Oct. 14,
to run, walk, or push (a jogging
stroller) during the Global Kids
5K Walk/Run/Push event, presented
by AlixPartners.
This year’s event raised more
than $30,000 for the Global Kids
College and Career Readiness Program,
which provides students with
one-on-one support as they prepare
to leave high school and go to college.
“As a fi rst-generation college student,
college applications were intimidating.
I oft en had to compete for time
in the guidance counselor’s offi ce, being
one of hundreds of students. I was
fortunate enough to have Global Kids
be my holistic support system,” said
Annie Willis, Global Kids alumna
and current Baruch College student
from Queens. “Global Kids not only
gave me guidance in the application
process, but also helped me gain
leadership skills that facilitated my
smooth transition into college.”
Global Kids’ College and Career
Readiness Program allows high
school students to explore their
options; participate in college tours
that include overnight trips; get help
with their college, scholarship and
fi nancial aid applications; attend career
days; participate in internships;
and receive important job training. It
also funds scholarships for seniors,
regardless of immigration status.
Last year, 99 percent of Global Kids
seniors graduated from their high
schools, with 92 percent of those
students going to college.
“Global Kids students oft en come
from families where they are the
fi rst to go to college, and they attend
schools that are under-resourced,”
said Evie Hantzopoulos, executive director
of Global Kids. “In partnership
with their schools, our organization
makes sure that our students get the
support and guidance they need to
go to college and to achieve their
dreams.”
