Motorcyclist dies after fatal collision
in Astoria
A motorcyclist died aft er colliding with a minivan in Astoria on Wednesday,
Sept. 23.
Offi cers from the 114th Precinct responded to a call regarding the collision
at the intersection of 33rd Street and 24th Avenue at approximately 9:15 p.m.
Wednesday night and found 27-year-old Mariano Canales, of 58th Street, laying
in the road with trauma to his body.
EMS arrived at the scene and transported Canales to Mount Sinai Hospital,
where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation
Squad determined that Canales was traveling eastbound on 24th Avenue while
operating a 2020 Yamaha Chappy Scooter. He was approaching the intersection
at 33rd Street — with no traffi c signal — when he struck a white 2005 Chrysler
Town & Country, police said.
The minivan, operated by a 73-year-old man, was traveling southbound on
33rd Street before stopping at a stop sign and entering the intersection when
Canales struck the passenger side front door of the vehicle, according to the
investigation.
The driver of the minivan remained on the scene and was not injured, police
said.
There have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.

Driver fatally strikes pedestrian
in Flushing: NYPD
A motorist fatally struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the
street outside of any marked crosswalks in Flushing on Sept. 19, according to
authorities.
Police responded to a 911 call regarding the collision in the vicinity of College
Point Boulevard and Avery Avenue just aft er 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Upon arriving at the scene, offi cers from the 109th Precinct found 56-year-old
Lujan Quintero, of Parsons Boulevard, on the ground with severe trauma to
his body.
EMS arrived and transported Quintero to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens
Hospital, where he died two days later on Sept. 21.
An investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad
found that the driver of a 2014 BMW sedan was traveling northbound on College
Point Boulevard when he struck Quintero, who was crossing the boulevard
from west to east in the middle of the block, outside of any marked crosswalks,
police said.
There have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing.
