Dist. Manager For the past 79 years, Social Security has maintained its place as an American cornerstone. Secure as its foundation is, Social Security has also been at the forefront of change. As the face of America has evolved over the course of the last eight decades, so too has Social Security changed along with the needs of the nation. On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said that Social Security “represents a cornerstone in a structure which is being built but is by no means complete. It is, in short, a law that will take care of human needs and at the same time provide the United States an economic structure of vastly greater soundness.” The Social Security Act that President Roosevelt signed that day covered a limited number of 27 • TIMES, THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 2014 Ownership Group Turning Glendale Mall Into Success Over 40 Businesses Now At Atlas Park by Noah Zuss After a shaky beginning, the Shops At Atlas Park in Glendale is rebounding and now holds over 40 retailers, while it has attracted four more new businesses this year, the marketing manager said this week. -SEE MALL ON PG. 55- Massive Net Security Breach May Be Costly To Consumers AG Gives Tips On Keeping Info Safe Attorney General Eric T. New arrivals in 2014 included discount shoe retailer Payless, Landing Gear, ULTA and childrens apparel store Crazy 8, DeLucia said. Auntie Anne’s and Foot Locker locations are scheduled to open later this year, he added. “(There’s) a lot more life here,” DeLuccia said. “There’s a lot of good events going on.” Opened in 2006, a portion of the Atlas Terminals Industrial Park was converted into an open-air, upscale shopping and entertainment venue through a multi-million dollar effort. Only three years after opening, however, the mall seemed to be on shaky ground with shoppers not flocking to stores and many retailers unable to pay their full rent. Atlas Park ultimately fell into foreclosure and a new buyer was sought. Macerich purchased the mall in 2011 and has worked to improve the malls fortunes by adding newer, more middle-class stores and various events for area residents to enjoy. Along with bringing in new stores, the Macerich ownership group also renovated the center green, which is now used to hold many events, especially in the summer months. As marketing manager, DeLucia is responsible for making sure the mall looks inviting to customers. He also plans events, deals with the retailers and oversees the signage atop stores, he said. “My role is to make Atlas Park look pretty,” he said. “To make it Schneiderman offered tips to consumers for safeguarding sensitive personal information online. “As more of our personal data is being exchanged and stored online, the risks posed to consumers by major security breaches has become all the more critical,” said Schneiderman. “As law enforcement pursues those who are responsible for these breaches, it is important that consumers remain vigilant. Taking a few key precautions can help keep you a step ahead of cybercriminals.” This latest breach, perhaps the largest ever of its kind, targeted websites of both large and small companies as well as individuals. It is believed that individuals suspected of being responsible for such breaches sell stolen data to third parties on the black market and use the information to send spam advertisements to consumers. The attorney general advises anyone who believes that they are a victim of this or any other security breach to follow these tips: • Create an identity theft fraud report. To do this, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and print your Identity Theft Affidavit. Call the FTC at 1-877-438- 4338 or visit www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0277 -create-identity-theft-report. • Use that affidavit to file a police report and create an Identity Theft Report. An Identity Theft Report will help you deal with credit reporting companies, debt collectors and any fraudulent accounts that the identity thief opened in your name. • Put a freeze on your credit report by notifying each of the credit reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion or Experian).
