The Lady Cougars of St. Pancras
School fi nished their regular
season with an 8-7 record,
which placed them in the fourth seed
in the playoff s.
Aft er losing in the Diocesan fi nals last
year, the Lady Cougars were on a mission
to “change the ending,” and bring
the championship home to Glendale.
In the fi rst game of the playoff s,
the Lady Cougars faced off against
fifth-seeded American Marters,
from Bayside. This was not a
problem for St. Pancras as the girls
easily moved on to the next round
with a 19-1 victory.
Next up was a real challenge for the
Lady Cougars. They were up against
St. Sebastian, a team that hadn’t lost
in two years and who were responsible
of ending St. Pancras’ season
in the Diocesan Finals in last year’s
playoff s.
In a tightly contested, back-andforth
aff air, the Lady Cougars were
able to avenge last year’s loss to St.
Sebastian by defeating them 6-3 in
the semi-fi nals, sending them to the
Diocesan Championship game for
the second straight year.
Confi dence for the Lady Cougars
was running high and even though
the original fi nals game was postponed
due to rain, the girls were
ready to fi nish what they started.
On Tuesday, June 20, St. Pancras
went head-to-head against St. Joseph at
BCAC Memorial Field in Broad Channel.
The Lady Cougars got off to a hot
start, as Brianna Amenta hit a leadoff
home run on just the second pitch
of the game. They managed to
load the bases in the first inning
with no one out, but were unable
to capitalize further.
St. Pancras continued to add to
their lead over the course of the
game, and the amazing performance
on the mound from Brianna
Amenta, who would surrender only
one hit and strike out 14 batters, led
the Lady Cougars to the 2017 novice
division Diocesan Championship,
defeating St. Joseph 7-0.
