WWW.QNS.COM RIDGEWOOD TIMES MAY 18, 2017 43 Photo courtesy of BWG Soccer TRI-M girls swim team earn 2017 CYO Brooklyn/Queens title Aft er an undefeated season, the TRI-M girls swim team — comprised of swimmers from the Forest Hills parishes of Our Lady of Mercy R.C. and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs R.C. — are the 2017 Catholic Youth Organization of Brooklyn/ Queens Girls Swim Team Champions. Over the course of the season the girls were able to win all eight dual meets, as well as the “A” Division Championship on April 1 at Nassau County Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park with a score of 306 points, a slim six points ahead of St. Sebastian, who placed second. The championship competition was a hard-fought battle aft er the TRI-M girls were tied for fi rst place with St. Sebastian with a score of 222 points aft er the Junior Division scores were tallied. However, once the seniors secured fi rst place in three out of the four events — the 100-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke, and 200-yard senior freestyle relay — it was clear the TRI-M girls would take home the title. The TRI-M girls were also on top of their game during the CYO Olympics on March 18 at Nassau County Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park as swimmers Julian Wu, Sydney Ewald, Tristinye Martinez-Reyes and Scarlett Firestone set a new record time of 1:04.10 for the bantam 100-yard medley relay. Other fi rst place winners for the TRI-M girls in the CYO Olympics were novice 25-yard breaststroke by Olivia Brown at 27.69; novice 100-yard medley relay by Victoria Kozdra, Emma Ghirardo, Eva Karagulian, and Joanna Baron at 1:26.59; and 200-yard freestyle relay by Madison Capria, Ariana Vernon, Olivia Conlan and Kiely Yeh at 1:49.51. The TRI-M girls team would like to wish their graduating members Alexandra Aledort, Madison Burke, Lauren Felle, Isabella Gianni, Michelle Lee, Nyah Loux, Olivia Wegrowski and Valerie Yuen success as they continue on in high school. SPORTS BWG boys beat Queens rival Met Oval 3-1 on Mother’s Day BY ANTHONY GIUDICE AGIUDICE@RIDGEWOODTIMES.COM @A_GIUDICEREPORT The Blau Weiss Gottschee (BWG) boys 2002 Academy team was able to defeat their local rivals Met Oval on Sunday, May 14, by a score of 3-1 at Metropolitan Oval fi eld in Maspeth. BWG got two early goals from their talented striker Sal Angelo. His fi rst goal was a well-worked team eff ort down the left flank where Angelo fi nished to the left of the Met Oval goalkeeper. Angelo’s second goal came on a counterattack with Renzo Chioldi providing a brilliant pass from the 50 yard line to Angelo, who outpaced his markers to once again fi nish to the left of the goalie to give BWG a 2-0 lead. Met Oval wouldn’t lie down to their rivals, and mounted a brief attack, but the BWG defenders and goalkeeper Ryan Foley were able to preserve a clean sheet. In the 28th minute, BWG was able to add to their lead as Joseph Kolarzh netted a penalty kick to give BWG a commanding 3-0 lead. In the second half Met Oval found some life as they buried a goal in the 50th minute, but were unable to complete the comeback as the game ended 3-1. On Saturday, May 13, the boys traveled to New Jersey to play PDA in a rain-soaked aff air that saw neither team score a goal, and ended in a 0-0 draw.
