KEEPING QUEENS
DINERS ALIVE
It was disappointing to learn that
Flushings Kane’s Diner is closing. This
follows closing of the Bay Terrace Diner
earlier this year.
I have enjoyed many excellent meals
for decades when frequenting any one
of our many local diners including
Kane’s Diner. Over the years, we have
seen the demise of too many others
including the Bay Terrace (Bayside).
Bel Aire & Neptune (Astoria), Gold
Star (Bayside), Seville (Douglaston),
Sage (Elmhurst), Nevada (Elmhurst)
Saravan (Flushing), Palace (Flushing),
Future (Fresh Meadows), Waterview
(Howard Beach), Fame (Jamaica),
Scobees Grill (Little Neck), Shalimar
(Rego Park), and other diners.
Diners have been part of my life
from teenage years to today. Eating out
is a periodic ritual with either friends
or family. Portions are generous. Who
never took a doggie bag home with
left overs to eat the next day?
Between the customary soup, salad,
rolls, coleslaw and pickles along with
the main course -- dinner could satisfy
the heartiest appetite. Many times, we
bagged our desserts to go.
Neighborhoods all over Queens have
seen changes over time. Many new
immigrant groups sometimes favor
their own ethnic foods and restaurants.
Diners have also lost customers over
time to numerous fast food restaurants.
Many of their menus have expanded
to also include breakfast items and a
greater variety of items to select from
for lunch or dinner.
Our local entrepreneurs who own
and operate diners have continued to
invest in our community creating new
employment opportunities without
the assistance of federally-funded
taxpayers’ stimulus dollars. They work
long hours, pay taxes and provide local
employment. If we don’t patronize our
local restaurants, they don’t eat either.
Why not honor the fond memories
we had at Kane’s along with Bay Terrace,
Gold Star, Fame, Future, Neptune,
Palace, Sage, Saravan, Scobee Grill,
Seville, and Shalimar which have come
and gone by continuing to patronize
our remaining diners. Here’s hoping
that Queens diners still in business
don’t go the way of the dinosaurs into
permanent extinction.

REST IN PEACE,
DA BROWN
DA Richard Brown, a legal giant and
an icon in Queens, was a dedicated
public servant who fought hard for
the people of Queens.
He changed the way prosecutors
handle cases involving prescription
pills, mental-health issues, veteran
aff airs and animal cruelty cases. He
served the justice system as a true
champion and try to do the right
thing.
I myself have served in the last 25
years on seven juries as a juror. I saw
how these cases were presented and
now feel it was because of DA Brown.
He has served with true dedication and
courage.
DA Richard Brown, you will be truly
missed and my heartfelt prayers go out
to your family, friends and all those
you aff ected for good.

BROWN’S LIVING
LEGACY
We in Queens County have been so
fortunate that Richard A. Brown was
our District Attorney for nearly 28
years. He had vision and innovative
programming to support his principles
of justice, safety and accountability.
He created the Domestic Violence
Unit in 1997 and three years later, he
established the Domestic Violence
Bureau.
DA Brown also recognized that
pets and other animals can be victims
of violence as well as other forms of
cruelty. Three years ago he created an
Animal Cruelty Prosecutions Unit in
pursing allegations of animal cruelty,
abuse and neglect in Queens County.
“Such atrocities, which studies have
shown can be a precursor to crimes
against people, constitute criminal
activity against innocent and abused
animal victims in our communities
and warrant prosecution,” wrote DA
Brown.
He leaves a legacy of decency and
commitment to the welfare of all living
beings.
