25 • TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2014 Forest Hills/Rego Park CERT Awarded For Answering Call Will Receive Honors From Emergency Management Office The Forest Hills/Rego Park Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for Community Board 6 was honored with the “Excellence in Deployment and Emergency Response Award” from the city’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM). The award recognizes a community emergency response team that has demonstrated a strong history of deploying for planned and unplanned events and excellence in response to emergencies in the past two years. Led by Team Chief Heidi Harrison Chain and Deputy Chief Barbara Stuchinski, the Forest Hills/Rego Park CERT will receive the award at a ceremony in Manhattan in June at the graduation of the next CERT class. “On behalf of our CERT team, we are very honored that the efforts of the members of our team are being recognized and we thank each of our team members for their efforts and time spent helping others,” Chain and Stuchinski said in a press release. The Forest Hills/Rego Park CERT team was trained by the city. Team members participated in a 10-week training program in disaster preparedness and basic emergency response skills taught by active and retired members of the Police and Fire departments. After completing training that includes lessons in fire safety, search and rescue, first aid and triage, the team helped in the community and throughout the city when needed. Forest Hills/Rego Park CERT members have given presentations at senior centers, schools, and apartment buildings and have held -SEE CHURCH ON PG. 59- Trade Union Seeks New Painters Application Period Begins On May 30 In LIC The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for District Council 9 will conduct a recruitment from May 30 through June 12 for 50 painter, decorator, and paperhanger apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced. Applications can be obtained, in person only, from District Council #9 JAATF, 45-15 36th St., Long Island City, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. The sponsor will be distributing 500 applications beginning Friday, May 30 and continuing for a period of 10 business days or until all applications have been exhausted, whichever comes first. The committee requires that applicants: • must be at least 18 years old; • must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC); • must sign an affidavit stating that he/she is physically able to perform the work of a painter, decorator, and paperhanger, which -SEE PAINTERS ON PG. 59- Street Renamed for Pioneer Council Member Daniel Dromm, center, and Council Member Paul Vallone, left with sign, were joined by Manford family members and many former and current elected officials to co-name 171st Street and 35th Avenue in Flushing “Jeanne, Jules, Morty Manford PFLAG Way” on Saturday, May 3. Dromm and Vallone co-named the corner in recognition of the tremendous accomplishments the Manford family made to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights movement on a national level. The Manford home is considered the cradle of the gay rights movement, a fact recognized when President Barack Obama awarded Jeanne Manford a Presidential Citizens Medal in 2013. The elected officials were joined by family member, Suzanne Swan, members of the organization Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and members of the community. Ridgewood Bee Competed In Español Students at I.S. 93 tested their Spanish linguistics during the Ridgewood school’s Spanish spelling bee on Monday, May 5. The 15 finalists are pictured with I.S. 93 Principal Edward Santos and other faculty members.
