TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 8, 2014 • 24 Women Honored At Luncheon Sampling Some Global Fare Borough President Melinda Katz received a women of distinction award from the Center for the Women of New York during the center’s luncheon in Douglaston on Saturday, April 26. The Center is a non-profit organization that has been advocating for women’s rights since 1987 and has been heavily involved in raising public awareness about domestic violence and human trafficking. Also receiving a Women of Distinction Award was Cheryl Wills of NY1 News at right, holding award. From left to right, Katz and Wills are pictured with Assemblymember Aravella Simotas, Rep. Joseph Crowley, entrepreneur Donald Gelestino, Center for the Women of New York founder and Chairperson Ann Jawin, Center President Susan Salzberg, Michelle Stoddart from Resorts World Casino and Alexandra Rosa, former chief of staff to former Borough President Helen Marshall. At ‘Taste Of Queens’ Event Hundreds Enjoy Borough’s Best Eats The foodie winners show their plaques. Hosted by the Queens Economic Development Corporation, the 12th annual extravaganza included performances by a Big Apple Circus clown, two tables full of World’s Fair memorabilia from the Queens Historical Society and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and special Mets ticket offers. There was also a taste competition as judged by a team of local foodies and media types. Zenon Taverna, which serves Greek and Cypriot food in Astoria, took Best Entrée honors with a Mediterranean octopus dish, lamb meatballs and taramosalata. Sunnyside’s Murphy’s Seafood Grill, which gave out oysters on a half shell, won Best Appetizer, while DF Mavens, which makes a wide variety of dairy-free ice cream flavors, prevailed as Best Dessert. “The food, the beverages, the networking, and the upbeat atmosphere were simply fantastic. I’m already looking forward to next year, and I am extremely grateful to our lead sponsor Fairway Market,” stated QEDC Executive Director Seth Bornstein. Participants included Amerivents, Bill’s Balls, Brooklyn Brewery, Chee Bonnet Cheesecake Balls, Christos Steak House, Desserts that Matter, DF Mavens, Dog & Duck Gastropub, Drink More Good, Dutch Kills Centraal, e-Desserts, F. Ottomanelli Burgers & Belgian Fries, Fairway Market, Jam Jar Bakery, Granola Bar None, La Adelita, La Fusta, Little Bird Chocolates, Magna Ristorante, Mama’s of Corona, Manhattan Beer Offering top-notch entrées, appetizers, beverages and desserts, exactly 49 vendors served samples of their products to more than 700 attendees in a festive atmosphere during Queens Taste 2014 at Flushing’s Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel last Tuesday, Apr. 29. -SEE TASTE ON PG. 59- Fun Times At Glendale School Carnival Children of all ages enjoyed a fun day out at Glendale’s Redeemer Lutheran School carnival last Saturday, May 3. Visitors got to enjoy a variety of inflatable rides and games for prizes along with food, music, vendors and other entertainment. The carnival took place in front of the school on Cooper Avenue between 69th Place and 70th Avenue and in its schoolyard. Proceeds raised during the carnival will benefit the school’s many programs.
