24 TIMES • APRIL 16, 2015 BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.timesnewsweekly.com victoria’s secrets VICTORIA SCHNEPS-YUNIS vschneps@gmail.com tweet me @vschneps Joyous addition Congratulations to a proud father, Carlo Scissura, the president and CEO of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, who – with great joy on his face, and endless smiles – announced the arrival of his baby Teresa Rose. She was born April 7, 2015, at 4:43 p.m., weighed in at 6 pounds 1 ounce, and was 20 inches. Here’s to a great life! Carlo Scissura with his baby Teresa Rose Jack Friedman Goodbye, dear Jack The cloudless skies sparkled brilliant blue but they couldn’t brighten the feelings of sadness that came over many in the standing-room-only crowd, as we sat in the chapel paying tribute to Jack Friedman. He died too young at the age of 55. In fact, his 56th birthday was his burial day. But, in some way, the people giving the eulogies made it feel like a celebration of his life. It was so appropriate. Jack had been the executive director of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, and he and I had worked closely together making the Queensboro Magazine something to be proud of, representing the growing and powerful chamber. It was a great professional relationship because we both respected the other’s passion for perfection. He had a powerful and loving feeling for the county and government and spent his life being a leader in it. But his body was not as powerful. As Carol Conslato, former president of the Queens Chamber and Con Edison vice president of community affairs, said at the funeral, “Jack couldn’t control his health but he did control his contributions to Queens. He gave selflessly.” His ability to bring people together was a unique gift. There was no dry eye in the chapel as Jack’s daughter, with grace and skill, made us all feel the love he had for her, her brother and his childhood sweetheart wife. I loved how she said he was a rent-a-dad to many of her friends, a dad who was on the school board when she was in school and continued to be involved in her life to her delight. I was privileged to know and work with Jack. He will be supremely missed. When Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney learned Hillary Clinton was about to announce her run for president, the congresswoman gathered supporters and a mass of media to hold a press conference to announce with fists in the air, “Ready for Hillary,” posters and all. I was impressed by all the 20-something young people who were there excitedly and energetically supporting her. I’m proud of my son Josh who created the market and partnered with the Plaxall Company, the owners of the property, to bring this market to the community. I sat at a table in the “Beer Garden” where we serve Queens beers and local wines and just relished watching the thousands of people passing through. My favorite vendor of the day was East Coast Roast, a local company that sells coffee from beans originating around the world. Current offerings are from Brazil, Sumatra, Colombia, Papua New Guinea and Kenya. My favorite was the Brazilian decaf. Having just returned from that country, I once again savored their coffee. But, the East Coast Roast owner, Richie became my hero when my car battery died and he supplied “the juice” to restart my car.
