Roberto Olivo of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. was arrested shortly after the early-morning accident on April 9 that claimed the life of Glendale’s Michael Messina, 21. Messina was riding a scooter along the underpass between 74th and 79th streets at about 4 a.m. on April 9 when he was struck head-on by an Acura SUV that Olivo drove. Sources said the Acura then stopped at the corner of Cooper Avenue and 74th Street, about a block west of where the accident occurred, after it burst into flames. Fire Department units and the 104th Precinct responded to the scene. Messina was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition and died later of his injuries. Following a preliminary investigation, authorities said, Olivo was taken into custody after police determined he had a suspended license. Olivo was arraigned on April 10 on charges of second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, aggravated unlicensed operator and driving while ability impaired. He remains held on $150,000 bond or $100,000 cash bail and is scheduled to return to court on May 4. Fatal bullets fly on woodside block Detectives continue to search for clues and suspects in connection with a deadly shooting on a Woodside street early in the morning of April 9. The homicide took place at 3:07 a.m. on April 9 in front of a home on 47th Avenue between 67th and 69th streets. Responding officers from the 108th Precinct found the 31-year-old male victim, whose identity was not disclosed by police pending family notification, lying in the street with gunshot wounds to his head and torso. Paramedics rushed the man to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Eyewitnesses claimed to have observed an unknown number of people running from the scene following the shooting. No arrests, however, have been made, and police said a description of the shooter and a possible motive were unknown as of Saturday afternoon. The investigation is ongoing. 104th Precinct Ridgewood, Glendale, Middle Village and Maspeth 108th Precinct Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside Photo by Mark Mellone Photo by Mark Mellone
