HEART CATHOLIC ACADEMY NAMES
ORATORICAL CONTEST WINNERS
The phrase “better late than never” was certainly true for Sacred Heart
Catholic Academy of Glendale’s annual oratorical contest. The event, originally
scheduled for March 2020, was fi nally held on March 16, 2021, nearly
one year later than it had been planned. The delay was caused by the COVID-19
pandemic. “Our four contestants had rehearsed their speeches for nearly two
months ahead of last year’s contest, only to have it canceled due to the virus,” said
Jack Seely, a volunteer presentation skills teacher at the academy. Determined to
hold the contest, these students began rehearsals on Zoom this past January and
their hard work fi nally paid off . The contest was won by eighth-grader Samantha
Anselmo, who successfully delivered a speech titled “Commencement Address
at Indiana University, 2006.” The academy plans to hold its contest again next
year, this time with no delays.
