FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com MARCH 24, 2016 • TIMES 23 easter s Glendale Christians ready to walk the way of the Cross on Good Friday BY ROBERT POZARYCKI [email protected] @robbpoz Prayers for unity and a procession of faith are among the ways Christians will mark the most solemn day of the church calendar in Glendale on Good Friday, March 25. Good Friday commemorates the crucifi xion and death of Jesus Christ; it is held immediately prior to Easter Sunday, which marks Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. First, the Glendale/Maspeth United Methodist Church will hold its “Seven Last Words of Christ” ecumenical service from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday. Seven preachers from both Catholic and Protestant churches will participate in the service, which will include sermons, hymns and prayers. Among those scheduled to participate are Bishop James Massa of the Diocese of Brooklyn and Reverend Dr. Philip Hardt, pastor of Glendale/Maspeth United Methodist Church. The church is located at the corner of Central Avenue and 66th Place in Glendale; light refreshments will be served following the service. Later that evening, local Catholics will hold a Good Friday procession through the streets of Glendale. The walk will begin at 6 p.m. outside St. Pancras Church, located on 68th Street off Myrtle Avenue. Priests and parishioners from St. Pancras and three other local churches — St. Margaret in Middle Village, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Ridgewood and St. Brigid in Brooklyn — are scheduled to participate in the procession, which usually features a likeness of the crucifi ed Jesus encased in a glass sarcophagus. The participants will proceed from St. Pancras Church eastbound on Cooper Avenue to 71st Street, then northbound on 71st Street to Central Avenue, westbound on Central Avenue to Myrtle Avenue and then eastbound on Myrtle Avenue back to St. Pancras Church. The procession will conclude with prayers outside St. Pancras. Offi cers from the 104th Precinct and the 104th Precinct Civilian Observation Patrol will accompany the participants. The procession is directed by Tony Mule, president, and Francesca Ferroro, president of the San Pio and St. Joseph societies. Ridgewood’s Cardella Center celebrates St. Joseph’s Day Nearly 300 seniors gathered at the Peter Cardella senior center on March 22 for a celebration in honor of the Feast of St. Joseph. The staff prepared an altar in commemoration to St. Joseph in the Sicilian tradition. Shown are seniors who participated in the ceremony along with Barbara Toscano, Cardella Center executive director, and chef Enza Bacile, who prepared the food for the altar.
