BARBARA P. WHITTAM died Thursday, February 13, at the age of 93, a
few weeks shy of her 94th birthday. A lifelong resident of Palmetto Street,
she was the beloved wife of Lt. Henry J. Whittam, mother of the late Dr. James
H. Whittam (Sibylle), Dennis C. Whittam (Barbara), Barbara Schechter (husband
Dr. Steven Schechter) and Dr. Denise Whittam. Familiar to all in the
community, she earned the nickname “Mayor of Palmetto Street.” She was
a phenomenal baker and cook, sharing many meals of traditional German
recipes with the entire community, including firehouses and schools. She
raised all of her children to reach for the stars and to believe in themselves
so they could successfully realize all of their dreams and goals, pushing
them to boundless limits. She cared about all of those around her and made
them the best they could be. Her favorite treat was listening to each of her
children’s play musical instruments as she sang loudly in the background.
Visitation was held Tuesday, February, 18 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 18, at 8 p.m. and
