Here Aims To Stop Abuse, Free Up Spots by Robert Pozarycki As the Assembly reconvened earlier this month, Assemblyman Mike Miller reintroduced a bill that would prohibit drivers from parking vehicles with out-of-state license plates on residential streets. The legislation (A.937) is identical to a bill Miller put forth last session; however, it never came before the full Assembly for a vote, so it expired when the session officially ended on Dec. 31, 2014. In a phone interview with the Times Newsweekly on Tuesday, Jan. 20, Miller explained the bill aims to stop license fraud while also freeing up parking spaces across the city. Looking to avoid higher insurance rates and related fees, some drivers who live in New York City reportedly register their vehicles in other states at either their vacation homes or the residences of friends or relatives. With more vehicles being registered out-of-state and more cars on the road, Miller said, parking has become a premium in neighborhoods across Queens. -SEE PLATES ON PG. 55- LIC Cyclist’s Death Pushes City Lawmakers To Action Legislation In Works For Safer Sts. The victim, Hoyt Jacobs, 34, of Bushwick Avenue, was riding his bike when, police determined, a private sanitation truck turned onto the intersection of 41st Avenue and Vernon Boulevard and struck the cyclist, law enforcement officials said. Officers from the 114th Precinct arrived on the scene, along with EMS personnel who pronounced Jacobs deceased at the scene. The truck driver stayed on the scene; no charge were filed, and no criminality is suspected. The investigation is ongoing by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad. Jacobs’ death spurred calls from elected officials to take action to try and prevent such incidents from happening again. “I am deeply saddened to hear about the first cyclist death in 2015. This death, though disheartening, will spur the council to action to pass legislation that will require the installation of truck side guards,” City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, who chairs the City Council Transportation Committee, said. “These guards will reduce the amount of serious -SEE BICYCLIST ON PG. 56- Adrienne Adams of Jamaica and Dr. Eli Shapiro of Far Rockaway were Katz’s latest appointments to the panel that oversees the library’s day-to-day operations.
