A FIERY STANDOFF
IN GLENDALE
Firefighters and police officers
rushed to a Glendale apartment on the
aft ernoon of Saturday, Jan. 13, aft er
two allegedly stoned men locked
themselves inside an apartment and
set fi re to the kitchen, it was reported.
The trouble started at about 2 p.m.
on Jan. 13 inside the building located
at the corner of Myrtle Avenue
and 79th Place.
According to the New York Daily
News, brothers Juan Matzar, 33, and
Fedrico Matzar, 27, engaged police in a
three-hour standoff while barricading
themselves inside of their residence.
Police had been called to the home by a

resident who found them acting strange.
Upon arriving at the location, NBC
New York reported, offi cers encountered
smoke on the second fl oor that
emanated from the kitchen. Emergency
Services Unit offi cers broke down
the door and subdued the Matzars,
and fi refi ghters entered the location
and extinguished a fi re in the kitchen.
The Matzars were taken into custody
and hospitalized for evaluation. Charges
against them are pending, the Daily
News reported.
Maspeth woman found
dead in Flushing
A 33-year-old Maspeth woman
was found dead inside a
building in an industrial
area of Flushing on the morning of
Saturday, Jan. 13, police reported.
Jennifer Franks, 33, of 57th Road
was found unconscious and unresponsive
inside of 41-16 Fuller Place
at 11:22 a.m. on Jan. 13.
Officers from the 109th Precinct
and paramedics made the discovery
while responding to a 911 call
at the location. Franks was pronounced
dead at the scene; there
were no visible signs of trauma,
authorities said.
Her body was transported to
the Office of the Chief Medical
Examiner for an autopsy. Sources
familiar with the investigation
stated that it appears her death was
“drug-related.”
The investigation is ongoing.
