TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 2015 • 14 Parents Sought For Ed. Council Election Play Active Role In Local Schools by Robert Pozarycki The Department of Education (DOE) is looking for a few good parents to become active members of local community education (CEC) and citywide councils later this year. Positions are available on all 36 CECs as well as the Citywide Councils on High Schools, English Language Learners, Special Education and District 75 Schools. Each CEC has nine elected members serving twoyear terms and two appointees of the borough president. The councils, according to the DOE, provide parents a voice in public education and tackle various topics at monthly meetings such as school zone boundaries, budgets and policies. Each body also submits to the DOE formal recommendations on specific items. “Members of education councils have a unique and critical opportunity to help shape education policy and become transformative leaders in their communities,” Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said in a statement. “I encourage all parents to consider applying for a seat to become even more involved in their child’s education and make a difference in their school district.” “CECs are meant to ensure parental input in our school system,” Queens Borough President Melinda Katz said. “It is critical to have parents be an integral part of the decisionmaking process to shape and set education policies. As a mom of two young boys, I can attest firsthand to the impact that parental involvement has on our education system.” “Parent leaders who are part of community education councils advocate for those most deserving of your time and attention—our students,” added Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. “Even with all the challenges, there is no greater honor than representing your community and making Brooklyn a better place to live, work and raise a family.” -SEE ELECTION ON PG. 28- ©Times Newsweekly -2014 - CHOPIN
