MORE HICT COURSES Train For Licensing Exam by Anthony Giudice The Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) will offer the next installment of its Home Improvement Contractor Training (HICT) classes in Long Island City. The classes will take place on Saturday Jan. 17, Sunday Jan. 18, and the following Saturday Jan. 24, at the Entrepreneur Space located at 36-46 37th Street in Long Island City from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants must attend all three classes and pick a date where the group will travel to NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) headquarters in Manhattan to take the licensing exam. QEDC will provide a HICT instructor that has worked with small construction businesses before to train the contractors to pass the DCA licensing exam. “This course really helps, and it is a golden opportunity to get the necessary licensing to work in New York City’s always active construction industry,” QEDC Executive Director Seth Bornstein said. “I would recommend it to any unlicensed contractor.” The classes which cost $300, or $350 at the door, will provide free, one-on-one business advisory services, such as consultations on licensing and permits, avoiding liability, procurement, business development, and access to capital. QEDC first offered the HICT course in 2012 and all participants successfully passed the DCA exam. Since then more than 200 contractors have taken these courses and have went on to pass the licensing test. “So far, we have a perfect record, as every HICT graduate who has taken the DCA exam has passed it,” Bornstein said.
