REMEMBERING MARIO CUOMO Gov. Made Impact In Native Qns. Born in Briarwood to Italian immigrants who owned a South Jamaica grocery store, Cuomo was New York’s chief executive between 1983 and 1994; he previously served as lieutenant governor under Hugh Carey and, prior to that, as New York’s secretary of state. Before becoming a renowned political figure across the state and country, Cuomo—who graduated from St. John’s University Law School—gained prominence as a lawyer representing Corona homeowners during the 1960s whose properties the city marked for condemnation tomake way for a new public school. Cuomo’s efforts to spare most of the condemned Corona homes caught the attention of city officials who enlisted him in 1972 as a meditator in another legal fight—this time with Forest Hills residents—over a proposed public housing project. Again, Cuomo helped reduce the project’s scale—and the outcome helped propel him into the city and state political arenas. Despite a rocky beginning that included a loss in the contentious 1977 mayoral election, Cuomo was elected lieutentant governor the following year. Soon after becoming governor in 1983, he quickly rose to political stardom. His resounding keynote address at the 1984 Democratic National Convention drew new supporters from across the U.S. who urged himto run for president in 1988 and 1992. He came the closest to a presidential campaign in 1992, when—just 90 minutes before a scheduled flight to New Hampshire in advance of that state’s presidential primary— Cuomo bowed out, declaring he would instead stay in NewYork to resolve a budget battle with the state legislature. Two years later, Cuomo suffered a bitter defeat to Republican George Pataki in a bid for a fourth term as New York’s governor. Nonetheless, the Cuomo family returned to the Executive Mansion inAlbany in 2010, when his son Andrew—who began his political career serving as his father’s advisor in the 1977 mayoral campaign—was sworn in as New York’s 56th governor. Hours before Mario Cuomo died, Gov. Andrew Cuomo noted his father’s absence during his second inaugural ceremony at One World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.
