It’s In Queens! News From The Queens Tourism Council If your New Year resolutions include weight loss, healthy living, recycling, learning about 3D technology, expanding business knowledge and contacts, admiring awe-inspiring photography, listening to great music, or just plain old laughing, Queens has something for you this week. Here’s the rundown. • Today (Thursday), Jan. 8, The Jantar Mantars of Northern India, regular hours. Opening day for an exhibit that runs until May 31 and features photos from Isamu Noguchi’s visits to Northern India, where he discovered 18th century astronomical observatories. These structures measured solar time, the celestial paths of the sun and moon, and the latitudes and longitudes of planets and constellations. Free. • Saturday, Jan. 10, Watershed Relief Map Presentation, 1 p.m. To show off the city’s water system during the 1939 World’s Fair, the Cartographic Survey Force, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, constructed a 3D, 32’-by-20’ model of the system from wood and plaster. However, due to a fear of spies as World War II was approaching, it went straight into storage. NYC H2O Director Matt Malina presents the map, which is on long-term display, followed by a Q&A with civil engineers who worked on the water system. Suggested $5 entrance fee.
