TIMES, THURSDAY, JANUARY 8, 2015 • 12 Time To Recycle Christmas Trees Mulchfest At Parks This Weekend by Robert Pozarycki Before all the needles fall off, residents can have their live Christmas trees chipped for reuse during the 19th annual Mulchfest at parks across the city this weekend. More than 45 parks are participating in the event coordinated by the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation. Residents can drop off their used evergreens at participating locations on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parks Department crews will feed each tree into a chipper for transformation into mulch, the majority of which will be used at public parks, gardens and other greenspaces to keep plants healthy. Residents can also pick up a bag of mulch for their own personal use. Prior to chipping, all trees must be free of any ornaments, tinsel, garland, lights or other decorations. Participating locations in the Times Newsweekly coverage area include the following: • Astoria Park, corner of 19th Street and Hoyt Avenue, Astoria (chipping and drop-off); • Forest Park, Forest Park Drive and Woodhaven Boulevard (chipping and drop-off); • Juniper Valley Park, 80th Street between Juniper Boulevards North and South, Middle Village (chipping and drop-off); • Maria Hernandez Park, corner of Knickerbocker Avenue and Suydam Street, Bushwick (drop-off only); • McCarren Park, Driggs Avenue and Lorimer Street, Greenpoint (chipping and dropoff); • Msgr. McGolrick Park, Monitor Street and Driggs Avenue, Greenpoint (drop-off only); and • Travers Park, corner of 78th Street and 34th Avenue, Jackson Heights (chipping and drop-off).
