According to police, the victim spotted the suspect Christian R. Mendez, 23, of 108th Street in Corona, walking behind her in the area of 74th Street near Metropolitan Avenue between 4:35 and 4:39 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9. Mendez allegedly approached her and said, “Give me my money.” When the victim refused to cooperate, cops said, Mendez grabbed her handbag and tried to wrestle it away from her, repeatedly striking her hand, causing bruising and swelling. At that point in the struggle, law enforcement sources said, Mendez pulled out a blade with a red handle and cut her hand, causing a laceration and bleeding to her hand. Offi cers from the 104th Precinct stopped the suspect soon aft er the incident; they found a plastic bag containing cocaine in Mendez’s pocket, prosecutors said. Mendez was arrested on charges of fi rst- and second-degree attempted robbery, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, assault with intent to cause physical injury with a weapon, felony assault and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Mendez was released on $35,000 bond or $10,000 cash. He is due back in court on Dec. 23. 107th Precinct Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica Man fatally struck by car on Van Wyck Trying to walk across the Van Wyck Expressway at rush hour proved deadly for a 41-year-old man who was struck and killed by an SUV in Kew Gardens Hills on the aft ernoon of Dec. 13. Th e incident took place at 4:50 p.m. on Dec. 13 on the northbound lanes of the expressway at Jewel Avenue. According to law enforcement sources, the 41-year-old man — whose identity was not released pending family notifi - cation — was observed jumping over the median of the highway and walking into the northbound lanes. As he did so, he was struck by a red Subaru Forester SUV heading northbound on the Van Wyck. Th e SUV driver remained at the scene aft er hitting the man. Offi cers from the 107th Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident. Th e victim, who suff ered severe body trauma, was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made, and the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is still looking into the matter. 112th Precinct Forest Hills and Rego Park Forest Hills man tried to sell stolen artwork A Forest Hills man was charged last week for allegedly stealing over $600,000 worth of art from his employer. On Friday, Dec. 9, Leon Zinder, 48, was arrested at his home and presented to the Manhattan federal court aft er allegedly transporting stolen Native-American and African art across state lines and attempting to sell them. According to the U.S. District Attorney’s Offi ce, from July 2010 to April 2012, Zinder was employed as an art handler by a New York-based company that managed a collection of Native- American and African ethnographic artwork. During this time, Zinder allegedly stole at least 13 pieces of art from facilities maintained by the company, including a Fang Reliquary Guardian Head statue valued at approximately $85,000; a Native American mask valued at approximately $75,000; and a Pende mask valued at approximately $5,000 from the company’s facility in Greenwich, CT. Later, from September 2015 through October of this year, Zinder allegedly sold the stolen art through an art dealer who worked through a fl ea market in Lower Manhattan. Zinder claimed that he had obtained the stolen artwork from an elderly widow in Phoenix, AZ, and from storage unit close-out sale. Eventually, the dealer became aware that the pieces he helped Zinder sell had been reported stolen by the company. Th e dealer then contacted the FBI and assisted them in the investigation, including turning over many of the stolen pieces of art. Zinder was charged with one count of interstate sale of stolen property.
