Seven historic sites in Queens offered guided tours and lectures, special holiday activities, and refreshments: The Bowne House (built in 1661); The Friends Meeting House (1694); Kingsland Homestead (ca. 1785); Flushing Town Hall (1862); Lewis H. Latimer House Museum (1889); Voelker Orth Musem, Bird Sanctuary & Victorian Garden (1891); and The Louis Armstrong House Museum (1910). Three trolley-vans were provided to transport visitors from one historic house to another. A casual stroll through any of these houses introduced many to a trove of American history. For example, the Friends Meeting House is NYC’s oldest structure in continuous use for religious purposes. The Lewis H. Latimer House Museum (pictured) was the home of the 19th century African American inventor and electrical pioneer. Still other sites, such as the Voelker Orth Museum (pictured), reflect the Victorian age in Flushing, while Frederick Douglass, Ulysses S. Grant and many others spoke or performed at Flushing Town Hall. Moreover, two of the sites, the Bowne House and the Louis Armstrong House Museum, are National Historic Landmarks. The tour was organized by the Queens Historical Society, which is located in the Kingsland Homestead and currently presenting the exhibit Practicing Equality: Quakers in Queens (through May 2014).
