FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.queenscourier.com DECEMBER 3, 2015 • BUZZ • The Quens Courier 69 dining out The Barn sheds light on Czechoslovakian cuisine By Brianna Ellis The Barn is far from your average idea of a farm’s outbuilding. This Astoria restaurant, bar and lounge serves Czechoslovakian cuisine and other European dishes. Most eminently, the spot earned its title as The Queens Courier’s “Best of the Boro” in May 2015. The Barn opened for business in November 2013, after transitioning from Club 21. Although its original Czechoslovakian menu is still available, the restaurant now offers a more versatile menu that caters to European and American flavors. The new venue has a more rustic barn and garden environment than before. Its dim lighting exudes an atmosphere of intimacy. The setting is intricately designed with wooden decor, ranging from the bar, floor, seating and window frames, complimented by brick walls. In addition to The Barn’s visual appeal, its food is also appetizing. For starters, the Angus beef sliders provide a small bite of juicy beef, accompanied by a tomato and pickles for $5. For the same price, the pulled pork sliders are prepared with sauerkraut and cranberry sauce. The braised beef short ribs are incorporated with garlic mashed potatoes, roasted red beets and a balsamic reduction for $18. This main course is flavorful, due to its soft, well-seasoned short ribs and mashed THE BARN 30-09 21st St., Astoria, NY 11102 718-728-0305 thebarnastoria.com potatoes. The New York strip steak is extremely tender, as each incision is made with ease. For $21, it includes grilled asparagus and fingerling potatoes, smothered with green pepper corn sauce. For an enhancement, combine this meal with a lemonbasil martini. It is comprised of Stolichnaya Citros, fresh lemons and basil mixed with ginger ale for $10. If you have room for dessert, The Barn’s key lime pie is both tart and sweet with whipped cream. The crepes are topped with whipped cream as well and filled with fruit and Nutella. The place is convenient for private parties and outdoor dining, which offers insulation during winter months. Its hours of operation are Monday from 5 to 10 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 11 p.m., Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from noon to midnight and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. A warm welcome awaits you at The Barn.
