Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. sent a letter to Parks Department Commissioner Veronica White on November 19, asking the agency to develop the Astoria Park pool area into an ice skating rink. The area being proposed for the rink is next to the pool and used for sprinklers during Photo Courtesy Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. The Astoria Park Pool area could be turned into an ice skating rink. Police said four people were collared and slapped with graffiti and criminal mischief charges for writing on the 22-50 Jackson Avenue building with black markers on November 20 at about 5:50 p.m. The alleged vandals include Willliam Romero, 20, William Marple, 26, a 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. Romero, Marple and the 16-year-old were issued tickets but released, the NYPD said. The next day, a 20-year-old was also arrested for marking a building with graffiti, criminal mischief and eight counts of possession of a graffiti instrument, police said. Property owner Jerry Wolkoff ordered a paint crew to whitewash the former aerosol art covered building overnight on November 19, according to 5Pointz spokesperson Marie Cecile Flageul. In response to a Twitter post on Wednesday calling for 5Pointz fans to come out and tag the building, 5Pointz tweeted, “We are asking respectfully for the building to remain white, please respect our wish.” “We need to figure out a solution to give fans an outlet where they can express their farewell…,’” 5Pointz later tweeted on Wednesday. The 5Pointz Twitter post on Thursday, November 21 at approximately 5:38 a.m., reported that the last piece of aerosol art had been washed away in white paint and included a possible salvageable piece on plywood. “Such a waste/genocide complete,” the post said. next to Citi Field is on the move. The Queens Borough Board voted on November 18 to allow the city’s Economic Development Council to sell the 23 acres of land for $1 to the Queens Development Group. The land is needed for the Willets Point project and would be cleaned up to make way for a 1.4 million-square-foot complex which will consist of a mall and housing units with commercial and retail space. “After carefully reviewing the Willets Point proposal and taking my district’s needs into account, I am confident that this development will be a win for my constituents, a win for Willets Point, and a win for the great City of New York,” said Council Member Julissa Ferreras, who represents the area and voted yes to the proposal. All seven councilmembers on the board who were present during the meeting and Borough President Helen Marshall voted yes to the proposal. The only no vote came from Community Board 7’s Chair Eugene Kelty. “The votes in favor of this proposal give us the unique opportunity to remove the blighted history of Willets Point and ensure it is a place for families to enjoy living and shopping for years to come,” said Ferreras. The City Council approved the $3 million Willets Point project in October. the summer. “This area in the Astoria Park Pool would make the perfect space for an ice skating rink for the residents of Queens to enjoy during the winter months,” said Vallone. “With the addition of an ice skating rink to the existing skate park and upcoming amphitheater, Astoria Park will be a destination for every season.” Vallone hopes an agreement could be reached for the Astoria Park Pool, like the one created between the Parks department and Open Space Alliance of North Brooklyn to maintain and operate the ice rink at the McCarren Park Pool in Brooklyn. The McCarren Park Pool uses its beach area, next to the main pool, for its skating rink. A personal trainer named Tommy and a defibrillator rushed to his side. Tommy found that Dad still was breathing and had a pulse. Eyes open and color normal. Although Tommy was certified to operate the defibrillator and to administer CPR, he did neither. Meanwhile, an announcement had been broadcast: a summons for anyone with medical training. Two club members – a doctor and a medical student – appeared. They commenced CPR. When the ambulance arrived, its personnel gave shocks with the defibrillator. But all this was too late: my father never revived. A: In New York, the Legislature has required health clubs to make defibrillators available and to encourage their use in medical emergencies. However, it has declined to impose liability on health clubs and their employees for such failures, if any, as Tommy’s. The reasoning appears to be that a law mandating the presence of defibrillators and trained individuals (such as Tommy) is easy to obey and enforce. However, a duty actually to use the defibrillator and to engage in CPR would engender a whole new field of tort litigation – saddling health clubs with new costs and generating uncertainty. In New York, a health club has only a limited duty to someone who seems to be having a coronary incident. Be sure to tell every detail to your attorney.
