86 The QUEE NS Courier • november 26, 2015 for breaking news visit www.qns.com sports Christ the King girls soccer team wins division championship BY ANTHONY GIUDICE agiudice@ridgewoodtimes.com/@A_GiudiceReport In a closely contested championship game that went into double overtime, the Christ the King (CK) girls varsity soccer team came out on top, defeating Notre Dame Academy of Staten Island (NDA) on penalty kicks, to claim the New York City AA Division title at Saint Anthony High School in South Huntington. The CK girls capped off an incredible season which saw them win the Brooklyn/Queens regular season title, the Brooklyn/Queens Championship after defeating The Mary Louis Academy, the AA Intersectional Title, and the New York City Title. The championship game began with a few exchanges between the midfielders of both teams, but NDA was able to open the scoring in the 21st minute, and followed it with another goal in the 26th minute, giving them an early 2-0 lead. CK got right back into the game when senior captain Medina Mulic was fouled inside the penalty box in the 29th minute and junior Kiana Leger was able to convert the penalty which brought CK within one heading into halftime. CK started the second half offensively as senior Andrea Cardozo was able to net the equalizer in the 46th minute from a 25-yard shot. Cardozo almost scored again two minutes later, but her shot struck the upright left post, keeping the score at 2-2. BWG U14 Academy team sets eyes on Spain By Anthony Giudice agiudice@ridgewoodtimes.com @A_GiudiceReport The Blau Weiss Gotschee (BWG) U14 Academy team beat the MLS New England Revolution academy squad 2-1 this past weekend to conclude a successful fall season that saw the team go 6-3-3. Now the boys have their sights set on Spain. The boys have the opportunity to travel to Spain next April to play the academy teams of professional Spanish football clubs Atletico Madrid and Getafe. Just like the city they play in, the BWG U14 Academy team is extremely diverse, with players and parents coming from countries such as Peru, Italy, Serbia, Montenegro, Jamaica, Ukraine, Ecuador, Ireland, Paraguay and Poland. What they all have in common and what bonds them together as a team is their love for the game of soccer. The U14 boys have been playing seriously since they were young and have devote a significant amount of their time to the game. They practice four times a week for about two hours per night, as well as putting in extra work in their free time to keep up with their competition. In order to reward them for their hard work, the BWG coaches have planned a trip for them to Madrid in April 2016. There the boys will attend coaching sessions conducted by the coaches from world-renowned football clubs like Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. They will also get an opportunity After finishing the fall season with a 6-3-3 record, the U14 Academy team is looking to go to Spain to hone their skills. to play the youth academies of professional Spanish clubs and experience a live Real Madrid game.
