Beer coordinates all senior year activities, is on the Yearbook Committee and participates in events such as the PRemature Baby Walk and school blood drives. She is also on the school leadership team with parents, staff members, the parent coordinator and Principal David M. Morrison; the team creates and evaluates the school’s academic programs. Away from school, Beer is an active volunteer, having worked stints at the Margaret Teitz Nursing Home, the Rego Park Day School and the First Friends Day Care Center. She currently volunteers in Hillcrest High’s chemistry lab and has acquired a profi ency in Microsoft Word. She is also taking “College Now” courses that Hillcrest offers in conjunction with Queensborough Community College. Campus Magnet sophomore doing her part Sophomore Florence Darelus of the Benjamin Franklin High School of Finance and Information Technology at the Campus Magnet Complex in Cambria Heights has become a big help in the school’s main offi ce. She is performing community service by distributing materials, fi ling, copying papers, arranging bulletin boards and other tasks assigned to her. She is also active with the student government and the school’s Newspaper Club. Darelus hopes to pursue a medical career as a pediatrician. Magnet students learn Spanish Off-Broadway Spanish teacher I. Tavarez of the Math, Science, Research and Technology High School at the Campus Magnet Complex in Cambria Heights does more than teach her students in the classroom. As shown above, she took her class to the Repertorio Espanol theater in Manhattan so they can view the play “In the Time of the Butterfl ies.” This offered her students a fun way to learn to speak and understand Spanish. Campus Magnet kids front and center at borough school fair Schools within the Campus Magnet Complex in Cambria Heights were well represented during the 2015 Borough High School Fair held recently at Francis Lewis High School in Bayside. The schools set up tables with displays featuring photos and illustrations of various programs within the school. Staff members and students were on hand to distribute literature and answer questions from prospective students and their parents. Staff members from the Benjamin Franklin High School for Finance and Information Technology are pictured at left, while students Israel Ovedapo, Kevin Garnica and English teacher Ms. Porter of the Mathematics, Science, Research and Technology High School are pictured at right.
