Dr. Vivian Tellis, Chief Emeritus of the Kidney Transplant Program at Montefiore Medical Center, will present the medical overview with illustrations and he will answer questions according to Rita Ash, chairperson. The Israel Center of Conservative Judaism (ICCJ) is located at 167-11 73 Avenue in Fresh Meadows and the community is welcome. Refreshments will be served. The second half of the program features a panel of four; two who have received kidney transplants from living donors and two living kidney donors who will discuss their decisions and the experience of transplantation. “Knowing that I gave another person life was like holding the baby you had just given birth,” said David Koster, a panelist. It is estimated that over 31 million Americans have CKD, Chronic Kidney Disease, and most are unaware. Symptoms of kidney disease are subtle and easily mistaken or ignored. Dialysis is a treatment that keeps patients alive, but it is not a cure. “The quality of life on dialysis with all the restrictions, complications and hospitalizations is not pleasant,” according to Shelley Fyman, the congregant in need of a living donor who will offer a kidney. Although cadaver kidneys, harvested from deceased donors, are a possibility, the live-donor organs last longer and have fewer complications. And the wait for a cadaver kidney can be from 5-7 years or more in New York. ICCJ is hoping that by raising the visibility of a specific person and putting a face on the problem, in addition to hearing the panel discuss their firsthand experiences, that there will be a wave of offers and several patients will be served.
