BayView Orthodontics celebrates opening
For people who had the unfortunate
luck of opening a business in March just
as the COVID-19 pandemic began, there
wasn’t much else to do but grin and bear
it.
But smiling is not an issue for Dr.
Inessa Kandov, who opened BayView
Orthodontics in early March, only to have
to shut down her offi ce down for the following
two months. Opening back up in
June, Kandov and her team recently held
a long-overdue ribbon cutting ceremony
to offi cially celebrate the beginning of the
orthodontist’s practice in Bayside.
“It was wonderful. It was truly a dream
come true,” Kandov said.
Kandov’s journey to orthodontics was
an unusual one. Practicing as a general
dentist for four years in Astoria, Kandov
decided to go back to school and specialize
in orthodontics, something most
stdents do earlier in their career.
“I was the oldest in the class,” she said.
“Some people thought I was crazy for
going back to school.”
But others in her life were more supportive,
including her husband, a dentist
who practices in an offi ce next to
Kandov’s new offi ce in Bayside.
“Th e grand opening was a thank you to
my family and friends for being supportive,”
the orthodontist said.
According to Kandov, the new offi ce
was created and designed with the patient
in mind. Built in a former movie theater,
the space is large and the ceilings
are high, creating an open and welcoming
atmosphere for adults and children
who may have suff ered traumatizing incidents
at dentists’ or orthodontists’ offi ces
in the past.
“Th e way I wanted to set up this offi ce
was for it not to feel like a typical orthodontist
offi ce,” Kandov said. “From the
moment someone walks in I want them to
feel like we are giving them a hug.”
Th e offi ce has also allowed Kandov
and her team to properly adhere to social
distancing guidelines. Th e practice has
spread out appointments, ensuring that
no more than two patients are waiting
in the waiting room at any point during
the day.
In addition to social distancing, the
offi ces are regularly sanitized and an air
fi ltration system has been installed to
lower the risk of the potential spreading
of the virus.
“We really took it upon ourselves to
make sure that everything is clean,”
Kandov said.
And patients have responded. Kandov
said she has been “surprisingly busy” with
patients, particularly adults who see the
current era of mask wearing to be a good
time to get orthodontic work done.
Even Kandov’s eldest daughter, Ariella,
“begged” her mother for braces.
Kandov, whose mother was an inspiration
for her, believes Ariella, 10, is on
the path toward following in her mother’s
footsteps. Kandov and her husband also
have a second daughter, Eliana.
For the orthodontist, it’s her daughters
that inspire her.
“Th ey were the driving force to decide
to just bite the bullet and go for it,”
Kandov said. “I want to be a good role
model for them.”
