62 THE QUEENS COURIER • BUZZ • SEPTEMBER 15, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com A New School Year As I got the photos from my children as each of their children began their fi rst day of school, it brought back sweet, tear-fi lled memories of the days I sent my children off on their fi rst day. I don’t remember if it was kindergarten or older, but I remember each year the tears rolling down my cheeks and feeling the nostalgia of the moment. There’s something precious, something to cherish about that moment. I remember the feelings of hope and fear for them – will they have a good teacher? Will they make a friend? Will they be accepted by their classmates? I’m a big believer that new beginnings bring us new power “to take on the world.” And with my fi ve grandchildren beginning their journey to new schools and new grades, the memories of my children’s departure fl ooded me. It seemed just yesterday that I sent Elizabeth to school each day with her lunch box and a personal note for her to discover. So here is an open letter to my children. Dearest children, It is with love and affection that I send these ideas to keep your dearest children embraced by your love even as they leave the “nest.” *Write a short note – “Have a great day” or “I love you” – and stick it in their lunch or backpack to be discovered that day. *Put a sticky note somewhere around the house where they can fi nd it – on their mirror or in their clothes drawer. Draw a smiley face and stick it on their shoes. If they have a phone (my Blake is in fi fth grade and everyone has one!), text them “You’re the best!” It’s all about making them feel your love and know how special they are. I think the words “you are special just the way you are” can never be said enough. May their passages be smooth and their lives fl ow as yours did, and give them the strength to handle whatever challenges come their way. I had known Sydelle from the time I moved to Bayside in 1969. We all lived in and around the Birchwood Towers in Bayside and had shared many “lifetimes” during my battle to help my daughter Lara and the creation of Life’s WORC, beginning with my friends like Sydelle who lived in the buildings. We also shared many days on the tennis courts and memories of sweet times as my other children were born. Sydelle had built a career from an educator to a guidance counselor and was respected and loved by her patients and friends, but mainly was passionate about her family and grandchildren. Emily, her heart and soul, is to be married on September 24 and although Sydelle made it to the first wedding dress fitting, her stage 4 metastatic cancer took her on September 2. I will miss this friend who was by my side and the bird on my shoulder as I navigated my divorce and was there dancing with her beloved Harold at my son Josh’s Bar Mitzvah. May she rest in peace knowing how many lives she touched. Addy and Jonah Hudson
