Queens Kickshaw in Astoria offi cially
closed its doors on Aug. 27 but vowed to
reopen in the coming months with a renovated
restaurant and new theme.
In a post on its website, owners
Jennifer Lim and Ben Sandler said they
would close the eatery to make way for
a new one in October. Th e restaurant
fi rst opened at 40-17 Broadway in March
2011.
According to Grub Street, Lim and
Sandler have decided to turn the restaurant
into a Chinese eatery.
Th e menu will include “Sichuan, some
Filipino-Chinese dishes Jen grew up with,
as well as twists on American-Chinese
takeout,” Sandler told Grub Street.
In a Facebook post, the owners said
they were “honored to have met so many
of you, fostered lasting connections, and
collaborated with local purveyors and
partners.”
But due to “growing business challenges”
Lim and Sandler decided to remodel
the restaurant and change the food and
drink menu.
“Th e Kickshaw spirit will stay in
place, though the food and beverage will
change,” the letter read. “We will maintain
our mission of being a supportive
workplace while envisioning a new gathering
spot for the neighborhood.”
To raise money for the new endeavor,
the owners are selling pre-opening week
dinner tickets for $35. Th e tickets include
food, drink, tax and gratuity.

the initiative, which launches on Sept.

“I think that lines up really well with
our goals as a small bookstore,” she
said. “We curate our selection really
carefully and this way you get something
that you know has the booksellers’
seal of approval delivered right to
you.”
Adults can choose from general fi ction,
suspense/thriller and nonfi ction
boxes, and children can choose from
picture book, middle grade and young
adult options.
Th e children’s boxes will also come
